St John’s Happenings

News from the Centre Street Food Pantry:   Please continue your thoughtful and generous giving!  The Pantry is in need of:  diapers and wipes (adult too), canned meats and fish, meals in a can, canned soups and toilet paper and other toiletries.  Also, if you have any extra brown grocery bags, they can be put to good use!  Please continue to leave your donations on the right side bench in the long hall – along with vocally spreading the word about the Pantry!  Thank you

SHOP AT SHAW’S AND HELP THE FOOD PANTRY Shaw’s Market is currently sponsoring a “Monopoly” game as a shopping premium. Shoppers receive a set of chances in a Monopoly-style game, one possible prize in which is a Shaw’s Gift Card.

Here’s an idea for the coming season of Lent: Let’s shop at Shaw’s and collect any gift cards we win to give to the Centre Street Food Pantry! We’ll keep them in a secure place in the church office.

The Reverend Mark D. W. Edington is our Celebrant and Preacher at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist, Rite II, this Sunday, February 22, 2015.  Child Care will be provided.

Church Parking:  It is recommended that parishioners coming for the service on Sunday to park in the Newton North parking lot.  It is plowed and accessible – and is much safer than parking on either Lowell Avenue or Otis Street.  Thank you!

Church School News:

This Sunday, February 22, there will be no Church School due to school vacation week.

The Next Book Group Meeting will be next Tuesday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m.  We will be discussing “The Storyteller” by Jodi Picoult at this meeting.  Reminder:  Please come with a mystery book recommendation for our March selection!  Please come and join us!

I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU PANCAKELESS No plumbing failure will stand between the people of Saint John’s and their pancakes. Yes, it’s now Lent, but we have a small respite just over the horizon: Refreshment Sunday, the Fourth Sunday in Lent. By tradition this was a day of relaxing the strictures of Lenten disciplines; there was a note of rejoicing in the Psalm appointed for this day, Psalm 66 (“O be joyful, Jerusalem” — now sadly replaced by the makers of the Revised Common Lectionary), and in England it was the time for visiting your mother (hence “Mothering Sunday”). It was also a time for making a heavy confection called simnel cake (think of a kind of fruitcake-light).

This year Refreshment Sunday falls on March 15. In the place of the usual Coffee Hour we will have PANCAKE HOUR. Mark your calendars!

VERIZON USERS, PLEASE NOTE If your internet service provider at home is Verizon — and particularly if you have an e-mail address that ends in @verizon.net — there’s a good chance that you aren’t receiving The Eagle or any other notices posted on the Eagle List. The reason for this is not entirely clear to us, but we know that a great many folks with such addresses have been unsubscribed from the Eagle List all at once—which makes us think that perhaps it was done automatically, and not voluntarily.

Please let us know if you wish to be receiving the Eagle, haven’t been, and have such an address. We’ll figure out something.

The 2015 Parish Directory is now available!  Please pick up your copy – they can be found on the small table in the Loring Room.  Thank you to Alastair and all who helped to get this produced!

Recipes and Memories, the new St. John’s cookbook, is out! We will be selling these wonderful gifts for $15. This cookbook contains recipes from our members now and from previous cookbooks made at St. John’s. Make sure to get your copy – there are available in the Parish Office!  Kate McKey-Dunar
