St. John’s Happenings

News from the Centre Street Food Pantry:

There is a great need for canned soup, along with cereal, granola bars, coffee and canned fruit.  Please remember the Food Pantry when you do your weekly grocery shopping.  Bring your contributions on Sunday, and put them under our “Christmas Giving Tree” in the upper hall.  The Dedicated Food Pantry Volunteers send their heartfelt thanks!

The Reverend Mark D. W. Edington is our Celebrant and Preacher at the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist, Rite II Service, October 13, 2013.  Child Care will be provided.

Mark holds office hours at Saint John’s on Saturday mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  If you have any pastoral concerns, you can reach Mark at 617.645.4691 or email him atmark.edington@gmail.com.

Sunday School News:

There are no Church School classes this Sunday due to the holiday weekend.

To register your child for Church School, please go to www.saintjohnschurch.com. The link is on the front page.

We are in need of people who can teach our children to bake bread, do crafts, and be with them for support. Please take time to see if you are able to help the wonderful children at St. John’s. If you have any questions about the Church School program,  please contact Kate McKey-Dunar at kemckey@gmail.com.

ST. JOHN’S COOKBOOK! We are continuing to compile recipes for the new St. John’s cookbook. The categories are appetizers and soups, entrees, desserts, and, of course, drinks. We would love all families to contribute AS MANY RECIPES AS YOU WOULD LIKE! You can submit your recipes at www.saintjohnschurch.com, under the tab “What We Do”, by emailing it to kemckey@gmail.com, or filling out a form in Kate McKey-Dunar’s mailbox.  Thank You!

What does it mean to be Anglican?  This fall St. John’s will host a Saturday series to explore some of the deeper foundation stones of the Anglican tradition, and seek to understand how they help shape the contentions of our day.  Meetings will be held in the Loring Room from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on October 19, November 9, and November 23.  All are welcome!

The Next Book Group Meeting will be Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m.  We will discuss Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.  We welcome everyone to come and join us!

The scheduling for a new SAINT JOHN’S PICTORIAL BOOK for 2013-14  is as follows:  Sunday October 13, 20 and 27.  Alastair Battson will be taking photographs following the service of all members, friends and anyone who cares to have a formal picture taken.  These pictures will be available for reprints and cards, etc. for a fee (all proceeds to go towards the upcoming church improvements), and will then go into the Pictorial Book.   Please stay tuned – more information will follow!

All Saints’ Sunday, November 3rd:  On this day, St. John’s will join in the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Parish of the Messiah, 1900 Commonwealth Ave., Auburndale.  As we’ve done in the past, St. John’s will remember those who have died during the past year, as well as “all the Saints” who are cherished by each of us.  Please give the names of those you wish to have remembered to Paula, either by leaving a note on the desk in the Parish Office, email to stjohnnew@rcn.com, or call 617.964.2591.

Reminder – Fall Back:  Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 3rd.  Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour!

Fall Work Day at St. John’s will take place on Saturday, November 16th from 9:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m.

The Building and Grounds Committee could use many helping hands to work on projects both indoors and outdoors!  If you have any time free that morning, please plan to come and lend a hand.  Thank you, and if you have any questions, please speak to Junior Warden, Alastair Battson.

SAVE THE DATE! St. John’s Arts and Crafts Fair November 23rd. If you know anyone who would like to be a vendor at the fair, please have them contact Laura Brewer at l.brewer@rivers.org. Thank you!
