St. John’s Happenings

This Sunday, August 31, at 5:00 p.m., we’ll hold our last Summer Eucharist Service, a simplified, casual service for a summer evening.  Celebrant and Preacher will be The Reverend Mark D. W. Edington.  And, at 6:00 p.m., we’ll adjourn to the Otis Street Lawn for our community cookout.  Child Care will be provided. All are welcome!

News from the Centre Street Food Pantry:

Soup Season is Coming!  As we get into fall there is great need for canned soup, along with cereal, granola bars, peanut butter & jelly, coffee and canned fruit.  Please remember the Food Pantry when you do your weekly grocery shopping.  Bring your contributions on Sunday, and put them under our “Christmas Giving Tree” in the upper hall.  The Dedicated Food Pantry Volunteers send their heartfelt thanks!

The Parish Office will return to the regular schedule of Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm; Friday, 9:00 am – noon following Labor Day Weekend.

Coffee Hour Sign-Up Sheet for September – November is now posted on the Parish Office door.  Please take the time to sign up for an upcoming Sunday.  Participating in this essential and fun part of fellowship at St. John’s is easier than you think!  If you are interested in hosting one, there areplenty of veteran coffee hour providers who could guide you and answer your questions. Thank you!

St. John’s Gift and Thrift Shop will be re-opening Saturday, September 20th  – 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Can you help?!  Any amount of time you can offer on a Saturday would be so appreciated.  We also hope you’ll consider either donating or consigning:  useful household items, home decorations, small furniture pieces, antiques and jewelry – items that are in good condition.  Please consider how you can help – giving of your time, donating items, and by all means coming in to shop and to visit. Thank you!

Introduction to Episcopal History and Belief :  Mark will begin a series of Inquirer’s Classes three Saturdays – September 13, September 20 and September 27  from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.  Please email Mark at mark.edington@me.com if you are interested.

The Newton Collaborative Confirmation Class will have its first class on Sunday, September 21st, 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.  Classes will be held at St. Paul’s Church in Newton Highlands.  Enrollment is open to all young folks aged 12 to 16.  Please see the flyer on the Parish Office door.

Mark Your Calendar – St. John’s Fine Art and Crafts Fair, Saturday, November 22, 10 am – 3 pm:  Do you make wonderful crafts or know others who do and live in the MA area? Save the Date:

On Saturday, September 13th, The Rev. Alan McIntosh Gates will be ordained as the 16th Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.  The service will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Agganis Arena at Boston University, 965 Commonwealth Ave., Boston.
