St John’s Happenings

News from the Centre Street Food Pantry:   A Special Thank You to Marjorie Carey for braving the icy cold conditions to pick up and deliver the many bags of donations on Tuesday!

Items often needed at the Pantry include: vegetable oil, bar soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, canned fruit, meals in a can (chili, stew, ravioli etc.), and jelly.

Please continue to leave your donations on the right side bench in the long hall – along with vocally spreading the word about the Pantry!  Thank you

The Reverend Mark D. W. Edington is our Celebrant and Preacher at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist, Rite II, this Sunday, March 1, 2015.  Child Care will be provided.

We welcome to our Sunday morning worship Sister Sarah Randall, SSM, a member of the Society of Saint Margaret. Sr. Sarah will be among us to talk about the community’s ongoing work in Haiti.

Church School News:

This Sunday, March 1, the children will be in church; we will not have a separate Sunday School this week.  Child care is available for younger children. If you are interested in having your child(ren) attend SundaySchool, willing to volunteer or have ideas about the program, please contact Jennifer Morgan at jmmorgan321@aol.com .

Church Parking:  It is recommended that parishioners coming for the service on Sunday to park in the Newton North parking lot.  It is plowed and is accessible – and is much safer than parking on either Lowell Avenue or Otis Street.  Thank you!

Reminder ~ Spring Forward:  Daylight Saving Time begins next Sunday, March 8th.  Remember to turn your clocks ahead one hour.

I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU PANCAKELESS

No plumbing failure will stand between the people of Saint John’s and their pancakes. Yes, it’s now Lent, but we have a small respite just over the horizon: Refreshment Sunday, the Fourth Sunday in Lent. By tradition this was a day of relaxing the strictures of Lenten disciplines; there was a note of rejoicing in the Psalm appointed for this day, Psalm 66 (“O be joyful, Jerusalem” — now sadly replaced by the makers of the Revised Common Lectionary), and in England it was the time for visiting your mother (hence “Mothering Sunday”). It was also a time for making a heavy confection called simnel cake (think of a kind of fruitcake-light).

This year Refreshment Sunday falls on March 15. In the place of the usual Coffee Hour we will have PANCAKE HOUR. Mark your calendars!

From the Altar Guild:

Easter Lilies:  It has been an Eastertime tradition at St. John’s to give donations toward the lilies that adorn our church windows and altar as a way of remembering those who are special to us.  The Altar Guild invites all parishioners to contribute to the Church’s Easter Lilies either “in memory of” or “in thanksgiving for” their loved ones.  Please send or bring your check to the Church Office along with your dedication by Friday, March 27th.  Thank you

The 2015 Parish Directory is now available!  Please pick up your copy – they can be found on the small table in the Loring Room.  Thank you to Alastair and all who helped to get this produced!

Recipes and Memories, the new St. John’s cookbook, is out! We will be selling these wonderful gifts for $15. This cookbook contains recipes from our members now and from previous cookbooks made at St. John’s. Make sure to get your copy – there are available in the Parish Office!  Kate McKey-Dunar
